Beyond Standard Scope: What It Took to Build Two Unexpected Clinical Spaces
Clinical spaces have traditionally been built around a familiar set of priorities: clean, functional, efficient, and easy to maintain. Increasingly, practice owners are asking their spaces to do more.
Greater attention is being paid to every part of the practice, including areas that once received far less consideration. Bathrooms, staff spaces, storage areas, and other secondary spaces are becoming part of the larger vision rather than an afterthought. The result is a more cohesive environment that supports the way the practice works while giving it a personality of its own.
Vumback Orthodontics in Natick, Massachusetts, and Protego Dental in Burlington, Massachusetts, are two startup practices and recent Wellen Commercial projects that are excellent examples of this shift in approach to clinical design and build. Both projects moved well beyond a standard scope to include custom elements, modern functionality, and a more refined overall experience.
Vumback Orthodontics: Not Your Typical Orthodontic Office.
Vumback Orthodontics was one of the first tenants in a new building in Natick, with a vision that moved well beyond the typical kid-focused orthodontic environment. The goal was something more mature, distinctive, and almost vintage-inspired.
Bringing that vision to life required a highly customized construction approach. A feature wall in the main treatment space combined integrated planters with vertical lighting, using no existing installation detail to follow. The team developed custom attachment points and carefully sequenced the planters, wiring, and finishes so every element could come together cleanly.
Even the smaller details required thoughtful execution. Knurled brass handles on the clinical cabinetry introduced an uncommon finish and another layer of customization throughout the space. Close coordination with Dr. Matthew Vumback and Joe Architect Studio helped translate each design detail from the rendering into something that could be built successfully on site.
From the feature wall to the cabinetry hardware, the project required a level of custom fabrication and sequencing that goes well beyond a standard clinical build.
Protego Dental: A Space Built Around Complex Details
Dr. Serena Patel and her Protego Dental practice moved into a newly renovated building in Burlington that offered the feel of new construction without starting from the ground up.
Arched passageways create a distinct rhythm through the space, guiding movement from reception toward the operatories. The original design called for glass inserts within the arches, but fabrication revealed that the radius was too tight to safely support the glass at its narrowest point. Rather than force the detail, the team collaborated closely with Joe Architect Studio to adapt the design and find a better path forward.
The reception desk required its own level of coordination. Hand-selected stone slabs are framed in wood rather than joined with a traditional mitered stone edge, creating a highly customized focal point. Bringing it to life required every team to work together. An arched glass-and-wood transom, gradient film, and pendant lighting added further layers throughout the space.
When the Vision Goes Beyond Standard, the Build Has to Follow
Projects like Vumback Orthodontics and Protego Dental show what can happen when you treat a clinical space as more than a collection of operatories, hallways, and support rooms. Every detail becomes part of a larger experience, and every unusual idea creates another opportunity to think more carefully about how the space is built. Custom details rarely arrive with a perfect set of instructions. They require collaboration, problem-solving, and a construction team willing to work through the details.
Wellen Commercial brings that approach to clinical projects throughout New England, working closely with owners, architects, and project partners to turn ambitious ideas into spaces built for the way a practice wants to work, grow, and care for its patients.
